Full Moons have long been the subject of many tales around the campfires, horror movies and more. Many even associate the full moon with bad luck and avoid public places during full moon cycles. But full moons are nothing more than the reflection of the sun off the moon and a great time to get outside and enjoy this once-a-month event. Below are some of our favorite reasons to enjoy full moon hikes:
1. Enjoy another point of view
Hiking during a full moon is a mesmerizing experience where one gets to see trail or area from another perspective. On exceptionally bright nights, hikers may even experience a trail without the need of lighting however we recommend you always bring a source of lighting. It’s wise to choose a trail or area you have previously visited and have experienced.
2. Peace and quiet
You’ll often find peace and solitude when hiking during full moons. It’s especially important to hike with others at night so consider joining a hiking group for full moon hikes.
3. The views
Enjoying a moonrise from a trail and/or peak is a humbling and memorable experience that often leaves people silenced and in awe. Pro tip: start your hike before the sunset to enjoy a beautiful sunset and moonrise from a summit, then enjoy the full moon as you hike back.
4. Wildlife
When hiking at night, you will hear and likely see wildlife that is more active during the evening hours when the trails are empty. This is a great time to enjoy the sights and sounds while learning about the wildlife in and around your areas. Being knowledgeable about the local wildlife will keep you and the animals safer and help you be adequately prepared.
